Mary's Page
My wife was born as Mary Ann Smith on September 28, 1945 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She died 31 Jan 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. We married on July 1, 1962 in in the Church of God, Silver Spring, Maryland, and were then sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 21, 1963. She lived in Soddy, Tennessee and in Sophia, West Virginia. Her dad was coal miner, her mother a practical nurse. Her parents separatd and when Mary was a teenager, she and her mother moved to Takoma Park, Washington D.C. Mary’s religion when we met was pentacostal and she belonged to the Church of God in Silver Spring, Maryland. She would sometimes stay at her sister Wilma’s home in Virginia where could spend time with her cousins Pam and Eric Gladden. We met at the America on Wheels roller rink in Alexandria, Virginia on April 1, 1962 and were engaged in May, 1962. Â
She was a student at Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C, and worked at J.C. Penny’s and then at Smith Transfer and Storage in Alexandria, Virginia and also at a printing company in Washington, D.C. Mary attended elementary school in Sophia, West Virginia and High School for one year in Soddy, Tennessee, and then in Tacoma Park. Â
We married in the summer following her junior year, and she finished high school, with American Schools, Inc. by correspondence after we marrried. We moved into base housing at Quantico Virginia, and then after I was discharged after four years in the Marines, we moved to Marion, Ohio for several months until I decided to go back in the military. We then lived in Ogden, Utah and Hill AB. After my retirement from the Air Force, we moved to Ohio and became snowbirds to Florida. Â
I have pictures of Mary’s final days in the hospital and the burial in Prospect Cemetery. They will not be placed on this website. If any family member wants copies, I will send them.
