Countries of the World

Author: Robert W. Penry @ 2021

Our world is made up of many countries. There are currently 195 countries as of 2020 of which 193 are member states of the United Nations.  The Holy See and Palestine are not members but are observers. Countries disappear and new ones are added.  Country borders and names change.  Countries are divided into political and geographic subdivisions. These can be regions, states, counties, townships, etc.  Each country chooses how to divide. Not all countries have defined regions. Not all countries have states, and not all countries have counties. To list the subdivisions of every country on the planet would be far beyond the scope of this website.  To see lists of countries by continent, click on the following links:

North America
South America
Antartica (no Countries)
